The Last Week Before Art Prize Goes Up

Whatta whirlwind! Everything is coming together for the hanging of my Art Prize entry at Women's City Club later this week. First off, the timelapse montage is finally done! You can watch it below:

Of course, it'd be even BETTER to see it IN PERSON alongside the actual drawings later this month, so, if you have the means, please consider going! (and throwing a vote my way if you like what I've done - I'm artist #62588) First round voting is 9/21 - 10/1, so, that's the BEST time to visit, in my opinion ;)

I'm framing all of the drawings myself with the help of my kits from American Frame, whom I love. A third (if not more) of the cost of sending it out to be fancified? I'll take it! I'm good with putting things together if I have the materials - a perfect fit as everything came in pristine condition and ready to go. So, if you're in the market, check them out! ESPECIALLY if you are within the vicinity of Toledo because you can also skip shipping and just go to their showroom to retrieve it all. Win!

This time of year always gets a little nuts, and apparently I have selective amnesia about that because I was feeling surprised (??). Get it together, self... this is the way of things when it comes to Art Prize - and all worth it!

Next up: find a cord to transfer my video to my tablet, frame that sucker, and finish putting the hanging hardware on everything. Bring it on Friday!

8 More Eye Portraits for Art Prize 8!

All are about 6x6" on smooth bristol, all are done in pencil. There is some ink in the first three as well. It's a really interesting addition to my drawings and I'm really glad I've been giving myself the space to experiment with it.

If you're interested in attending Art Prize and seeing my piece (which will also include video) - I'll be showing at Women's City Club near the city center in Grand Rapids. It runs from September 21st to October 9th. My artist number (for voting) is 62588.

All of the artwork has a page of its own HERE.

Switching Gears Toward Art Prize

No rest for the wicked! I have a bear of an Art Prize piece to finish, so, I've hit the ground running with a new eye drawing (upper left, below). I haven't posted many of these to my newsfeed, so, here's a little gallery of all eleven that I have done, so far. I'm hoping to complete 100 when the proverbial fat lady sings:

Third Eye Drawing - Experiments That Worked!

Pencil, Sharpie & ball point pen

Pencil, Sharpie & ball point pen

So, I was really keen to work on a non-caucasian skin tone AND eye shape, so here we are! I toned the paper first and "built" the portrait on top (with some erasing). As I was working, I realized that my pencil arsenal did not have the range to get the deep darks I wanted (sorry, 4B).

So, what did I do? I gingerly grabbed a sharpie and filled in the iris and pupil. Then, I got a black Bic pen and enhanced the skin folds - it gave a nice depth of tone that wasn't as bold as the sharpie, but darker than the pencils. At the end, I REALLY pressed my luck and used Sharpie veeeeeery lightly in the upper eye creases and the corners of the eye.

So, what do you think? I'm calling it a great first try... for now. :)

First Drawings for ArtPrize 2016!

Holy cow, I'm doing a lot of art stuff this year! ...I love it! Hooray!

It's ArtPrize artist registration time again and I'm all signed up and ready to connect with a venue. That phase starts next week, so, I'm keen to get some drawings done to attract a great potential partner. Here are two... pencil drawings (old skool!).

I've described my ArtPrize idea this way:

After the incredible response to my entry last year (Rob, see video below), where I displayed a large realistic drawing and included time lapse video of how it was created, I’ve been inspired to work in that realm again. This work will focus solely on the human eye and all of its magnificent detail. Is it the “window to the soul”? What can you see with your OWN eyes when you study another’s? And finally, how were they created? I’m interested in letting non-drawers (and NEW drawers!) inside my creative process with this piece. Thank you!

Fingers crossed that venues are as keen on my idea as they were last year - maybe even MORE so! I'll post about it all once it starts. In the meantime, drawdrawdraw...
