8 More Eye Portraits for Art Prize 8!

All are about 6x6" on smooth bristol, all are done in pencil. There is some ink in the first three as well. It's a really interesting addition to my drawings and I'm really glad I've been giving myself the space to experiment with it.

If you're interested in attending Art Prize and seeing my piece (which will also include video) - I'll be showing at Women's City Club near the city center in Grand Rapids. It runs from September 21st to October 9th. My artist number (for voting) is 62588.

All of the artwork has a page of its own HERE.

PS: Is this a dream??! EXCITE!

Four New Derby Portraits Underway!

In anticipation of my solo show at MICA in Lansing next month, I've begun several new carbon dust roller derby portraits! Just as with the last group, the paper here has been skated on by The Ann Arbor Derby Dimes (my league), and then the skaters are drawn with carbon dust over top. These are 22 x 30" and on Arches' hot press watercolor paper.

If you want to see them in person and live in Michigan/Ohio/Indiana/Narnia, please come out to the show which opens on May 6th and will run until July 2nd. There's a FB event HERE.

Enjoy!

Detroit's Scarab Club Silver Medal Exhibition Includes BombYa & Murder!

Remember those roller derby portraits I created last year? Yeah? No? Well, two of them (l-r: Murder, BombYa) were chosen as part of The Scarab Club's Silver Medal Exhibition in Detroit! The opening was last Friday:

...and it runs until the 28th of March. There will be a talk with the show's juror, Adrian Hatfield, on March 19th. I may attend to talk art. We shall see.

Oh, and then there's the "little thing" about Murder's portrait receiving 2nd Place in the whole thing. No truly, I am SO honored to have gotten this accolade!

My artist number for voting is 56760

It's Game Time.

Upzette is a winner! Best in the Drawing category!

Upzette is a winner! Best in the Drawing category!

As silly as it might seem, I get nervous over everything where my work is on public display. Yes, "even" an employee art exhibition. There were 200 entrants vying for awards and lookit me! I got one! I'm very honored! Perhaps this will lead to more partnerships with U of Mich to display my work - the ladies talked to me about it - so, stay tuned for that.

Next on to ArtPrize...

Terror Misu, the 10th completed derby portrait.

Terror Misu, the 10th completed derby portrait.

All eight derby portraits are ready for framing in preparation for ArtPrize in Grand Rapids! The official hanging of the show is Sept 17th - I cannot fathom how time got me here already! I'll post some pictures documenting all of this.

Now I'm going to go try not to fantasize too much about winning ArtPrize. That, ladies and gentlemen and everyone, would (and I'm not even remotely kidding) change my life.

Scanning the Final Derby Portraits Myself

Eff it. I'm scanning these derby portraits and tiling them together in Photoshop. One place here in Ann Arbor wanted FIFTY-EIGHT DOLLARS PER DRAWING to scan. Ha!

I think my little Epson scanner did just fine with these:

A Lovely Night for Derby & Art

The derby portraits, hung up at Buhr Park for the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes' bout!

The derby portraits, hung up at Buhr Park for the Ann Arbor Derby Dimes' bout!

It was a great night for derby and to talk to folks about my work! I'm bummed that I didn't announce that this was happening here in the News beforehand... I don't know what I was thinking on that front.

Anyway, I'm so grateful to have met so many wonderful folks last night and am SO happy to have such a supportive league that let me have this little show.

Lastly, if you look closely at the ground (above), there were four blank pieces of drawing paper taped down! You know what that means... New art is coming!!

Perfect Upzette's Derby Portrait is Off to U of Mich Employee Exhibition!

Upzette is done and ready for the U-M Employee Art Exhibition! I believe it'll be on display on the first floor of Taubman Center in about 2 weeks, opening reception on 9/9 and then it'll be up for 2 months. Let me know if you see it!

PS: "The honor of People's Choice, determined by votes of visitors to the exhibit, will also be awarded."

**IMPORTANT NOTE:  You have to LOGIN to vote! Clicking 'like' is not enough. The site is not clear about that. If you do not see a pop-up asking for you to login, then something isn't right. I think this is common on phones. Sorry for the confusion - I've emailed the organizers. Please consider re-voting if you think this might be you. You're the best!
